I Made 100 Comments On Ordinary Folk

danielle_100.gifSo I did it! I made 100 comments on Mike’s Ordinary Folk blog all within a month (less than 100 month actually!). Why? Why not?

I always have a lot of fun over at Mike’s blog because sometimes the comments turns into a full-out comedy troupe, which is of course fun.

There was even a little guessing contest to see who could guess the correct date of my 100th comment. No one guessed the day I did it however.

But since I made 100 comments on Ordinary Folk, Mike made me a Bella Award to commemorate the occasion. And she is so adorable I just want to make her wear funny hats. :)

This post will be unavailable_after next week

People keep blogging about the unavailable_after tag that Jill Whalen mentions after hearing Dan Crow from Google speak at SEMNE. The unavailable_after tag is apparently exciting because it tells spiders when the page can no longer be crawled. This means that if you have promotional material online, or plan on moving pages to a paid section after a period of time, you simply use the unavailable_after tag. And despite some initial skepticism about the unavailable_after tag, Google has officially commented on this robots exclusion tag.

One the hand, it appears that the unavailable_after tag seems pretty useless. This is a valid viewpoint for bloggers. A loss of backlinks and traffic does not seem an incentive to go the extra effort of putting in the tag, and really, there would be no reason to.

But for newspapers and auction sites like eBay, I can see how these will be of benefit, not only for the sites but for the search engines. This means that sites that produce many pages daily can set a time limit for how long the pages should be crawled, which means that irrelevant pages will no longer appear in Google’s search results.

Most importantly, I think this may mean something to the average Google user - in theory, irrelevant outdated pages need no longer appear in the search results which increases the chance of finding relevant information.

But will they get used? Well, I suppose only time can tell, but I look forward to watching how this tag is used by webmasters. Do you see any positive or negative repercussions of the unavailable_after tag, if any at all?

Sunday Reviews 7th Edition Unplugged

free blog reviews

How do you get a Free Sunday Blog Review on my Pink Internet Marketing blog? Comment on my blog - and make it a good one. I will pick 5 blogs for a mini-review here every Sunday. Just my way of saying “Thanks for stopping by” and to encourage comments from other bloggers.

I missed last Sunday’s Reviews so this week I am doing a special Unplugged link love post to make up for it. :D What does that mean? I don’t know, but it sounds cool. It just means that I will be doing things a little differently this time around. Usually I do mini-reviews and link to the blog, this time I will link to the blog, do a minier review and link to a post that caught my eye(s). I have more to do this time in my weekly link love post.

SEO 101 Podcast - The only podcast people should listen to, in my opinion. They are funny and talk about search engine marketing. And what else is there? :D Good one: Lee Odden Discussion on NoFollow tags

NeonScent - This is a great blog by Grace about blogging, blog promotion, and much more web-related information, and she also is listing all the blogging tips from the recent meme. Great post by Grace: The Most Effective Place for Ads

Sugar Queen’s Dream - I love the candor and humor of this blog. There is one particular technique this blogger uses of writing first what she actually meant, then striking it out, then rewriting the edited version. Too funny! Prime example: Old Habits Die Hard

Artifacting - A chronicle of the life and thoughts of Hubs, this is a well written and interesting diary blog full of humour and life. I didn’t even have to dig to find this post and I love bacon: Bacon Flavored Water

Boston Brat - Angela’s blog is a great sports and much more blog that really shows what a dynamic woman she is. Posting on a variety of topics, this blog is very intelligent and funny. This bothers me too: College Bookstore Price Gouging

Single Grain - A great SEO blog with very detailed posts to help those looking to promotes their blogs and websites, and with tips for bloggers. I have been looking for a post like this: Guest Blogging 101

Blogging for Business - Ted Demopoulous writes about blogging - plain and simple. He is coincidentally the author of my new blogging book. :) Great blog to learn about all that blogging has to offer entrepreneurs. I love podcasts: 3 Entrepreneurial Uses of Podcasting

Vegan Momma - A blog that combines so fun details about the development of the blog, but that features Vegan recipes and photos that even from a carnivore’s perspective look appealing. I love these and must have them: Vegan Fried Green Tomatoes

Top SEO Blog - An Indian SEO blog full of information about search engine optimization and SEO news. Everyone’s all twitterpated about Matt Cutts at Wordpress 2007: Latest Algorithm Change Tips from Matt Cutts

I really can’t believe I have missed this blogger. I am ashamed. Great blog that I visit quite often and leave sometimes drawn-out comments. :) It’s not a really big deal - but I have been doing these for 7 Editions and I have not mentioned a blog that I have been visiting regularly for several editions at least, and pretty shameful and thoughtless of me when here I am trying to tell people I am a decent person.

Bush Mackel

Great blog about blogging and web development. A very helpful blog to visit and Bush is a great guy with great ideas (and I am sure a wonderful dad), and Bush says that “technology is where he lives”. Great stuff all the time. For sure read his latest blogging series (as if you have not already!): Start Blogging

Do blogs contain the recipe for happiness?

I have read that blog posts are a reflection of one’s happiness and what is presented in A Corpus-based Approach to Finding Happiness (PDF) seems inaccurate and flawed both in findings and their approach.

This study was conducted by Rada Mihalcea (Computer Science and Engineering, University of North Texas) and Hugo Liu (Media Arts and Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in order to determine the sources of happiness and sadness. By employing linguistic ethnography to break down LiveJournal blog posts to the annotated “moods” and then cross reference these with what those posts are about, they present a LiveJournal recipe to happiness based on sheer semantic analysis.

Here is the recipe for happiness according to blog posts:

Recipe for Happiness

Ingredients
- Something new
- Lots of food that you enjoy
- Your favorite drink
- An interesting social place

Directions
Go shop for something new – something cool, make sure that you love it. Then have lots of food, for dinner preferably, as the times of breakfast and lunch are to be avoided. Consider also including a new, hot taste, and one of your favorite drinks. Then go to an interesting place, it could be a movie, a concert, a party, or any other social place. Having fun, and optionally getting drunk, is also part of the recipe. Note that you should avoid any unnecessary actions, as they can occasionally trigger feelings of unhappiness. Ideally the recipe should be served on a Saturday, for maximum happiness effect. If all this happens on your birthday, even better.

From blog to book

Many bloggers make the move from blogging to actually writing full-length books in print. This seems like a good idea to me - your success as a blogger can really help you to promote your book online. Gina at the Lifehacker blog wrote about translating your blog into a book and she made the following statement which I think rings true:

…the advantage any blogger-to-be-author has is this: you’ve already created an audience. Because of Lifehacker.com, I was able to include web site statistics, reader testimonials and site awards in my book proposal, which convinced my publisher there was already interest in the topic. Not to mention the thousands of posts on the web site which gave them a clear idea of my tone and writing style.

And these days if you want to publish and sell a book, it is no longer necessary to have an agent and a publisher - you can do it all yourself. At Lulu.com you can
and by promoting it on your blog, you will no doubt get some sales. Since they do not require any set-up fees, you don’t end up wasting money if *heaven forbid* you do not sell as many as you would like. They have many services to promote your publication, and even a community that no doubt will help you gain insight from seasoned online publishers. And they do not restrict themselves to books alone - you can also publish calenders, CDs, photo books, dissertations, brochures and much more.

This print on demand publishing method has many advantages. At Beneath the Cover Yvonne Divita mentions that:

It’s a faster way to market – POD publishers can turn a book around in several months, compared to years at a traditional publishing house. And, it’s more personal. The author gets to have a say in cover design, choice of title, and page layout.

I think that the freedom that comes with this approach to publishing will be a big appeal to many people looking to translate their blog into a book. As bloggers are accustomed to the personal aspect of blogging with complete freedom of content and design, it would be difficult to deal with suddenly conforming to the requirements of the publisher.

Blogthropology

So I added a new category to my blog: Blogthropology. These will be my posts relating to blogging culture, as they have not only been interesting for me to write, but the two posts I have written appear to have been enjoyed by others.

What does this have to do with internet marketing? A lot, in fact. Marketing is a science and an art, and it is one’s ability to step into another person’s shoes and to understand their condition that makes you capable of comprehending motivations that are of interest to marketers, online or otherwise. In order to appeal to “people online” you must understand “people online”, and not only understand them but be able to see through their eyes, which is the core purpose of anthropology. Are you seeing the connection?
