The Value of a Blog for Business

Related to my last post, I wanted to pose this question to my readers: What is the value, if any, of blogs for business? Do you think that businesses should have a blog that comments on their industry or do you think a plain old website does the trick?

Blogs are good for businesses because they can reach a larger number of people that they may not normally converse with. Blogs can take the corporate feel away and people become more relaxed and then feel like they want to contribute. Most business websites are too corporate and boring. You should have both websites and blogs in my opinion.

Great comment! I agree that it is important for a company not to take itself too seriously. I think that is why I love Google so much.

Andy pretty much summarized the primary basis of maintaining a business blog. I think it simply offers another means by which to attract a crowd that otherwise wouldn’t have an interest in looking at your website or product/service.

Depending on if you can work it or not, they can be a great and relatively “easy” way to get backlinks to a site too. So I think it could work. (BTW, Love the new header! Is that the snuggle bear?)

Yes, blogs are better for creating “linkbait”. And I think commenting on industry specific issues can go a long way for creating a buzz about your company.

The bear is my Build-A-Bear, and the header was made for me by my friend Hernan, who does most of the the amazing graphics I have on my blogs. But this bear is really “snuggly” and I snuggle her all the time!

My reasons for business blog…
- Documentation/Reference for staff
- Embrace customers/feedback
- Google juice as mentioned
- Show you have a passion for your business and your clients work
- Light heartiness/bit of fun etc
- If your lucky new customers
- Community online presence with other businesses in your area

Jaime - Great list! Your blog definitely attracts people to it, and it does create a good corporate presence for you online. I really like the idea of business sites having an attached blog, and your blog has been one of my main sources of inspiration on this point.
