Google AdSense Referrals perfect for bloggers
I recently reported on AdSense Referrals 2.0 being out of beta, and as I have explored this new feature I have come to realize that this is a perfect tool for bloggers in particular.
Referrals 2.0 differs from traditional ads in that here you can actively encourage clicks and endorse that which you are referring. are much different than the contextual ads, and they even suggest the following:
Treat referral units as site content rather than traditional ad space. By integrating text links or buttons into related content on your page, you can improve the experience users have on your site, enabling them to easily find the referral buttons you discuss in your content.
This means a lot for bloggers in my opinion: Instead of doing review for a site from PayPerPost or the like, why not do a review for a site listed in AdSense Referrals. You get paid for every lead you generate and thus increase your site revenue, as well as your site’s content. And since you can select which advertiser to discuss, you can find something that is in line with the theme of your site.
Some tips for using AdSense Referrals 2.0:
- Find ads that you would actually endorse.
- Try to get the reader excited about the site you are referring. You want to generate a lead after all. :)
- Ensure that this is still a quality content post. The better the post is, the more traffic you will generate, the more traffic you generate, the more opportunity for new leads.
- Check back often as new sites are added. This is a good source for content ideas too.
- Customize your links to match your blog.

This does sound really interesting, Danielle. Do they pay out in the same way as the regular adsense ads with clicks, or do you have to generate sales?

I’m going to wait for the PR update to happen before I take a look at it. It looks real promising from a quick glance.

I’ve been staying with Google’s progress on this for quite some time now, and I can definitely say that I’m very glad it’s finally out of beta.
From the get-go it looks to be a very feasible source of additional revenue for bloggers. In addition, it has the ability of being quite targeted…provided that the blogger knows how to identify his/her market.
Bottom line, I expect to make quite a lot of money off of this one, just as I do with other affiliate/referral programs. And I certainly hope that you do too! :)
Shine on,
Aaron

I think it’s really cool that the referrals are out of beta as well. Google products only generate so much interest, and the average internet user doesn’t want to change their browser just because a blogger says they should.

Yeah I am pretty excited about the possibilities of the referral ads - the only thing that concerns me is that when the advertiser no longer uses the Adwords what happens to the text link? I will have to monitor my links to ensure they remain the same as I want to integrate them into posts.

Hey Danielle. It looks like the referrals aren’t quite out of Beta (or I’m missing something obvious) because they tend to conk out sometimes. Sometimes they display PSAs but a lot of the time they just disappear.
Anyway I just wanted to tell you and your bajillion readers about my awesome writing competition I’m having at WriteNonsense. It’s open to just about anyone and there are 3 link prizes with varying degrees of coolness. It’s at

This certainly looks like it has promise. Adsense has a tendency to put odd adds on my site (probably because I make odd connections while explaining things) so it will be nice to be able to provide a more focused ad.
I did a post on pirates doing web page design a while back and I am still getting random adsense ads like “Pirate Princess Party”. I think my writing style is sabotaging my adsense so I am looking forward to seeing how this works out.
Thanks for talking about Google Referrals. I was already thinking about checking them out and I think this article has convinced me to do so. Now I just need to decide how I want to use them on my site…

Sometimes on my old Tripod domain it would show ads for tripods!!!
Good luck with it, it’s neat because you can use these in the way that suits your blog best!
