Goodbye Wonderful World of Windows 98, Hello Feisty Fawn

Here is the story of the old laptop: There is this old laptop sitting in my basement. It’s been sitting there, doing nothing. I tried to turn it on a few months ago and it would not boot. I had to reinstall an operating system. Since I was using all my Windows XPs on computers already, I had to install Windows 98 just to get it up and running. It turns on and a window appears that says Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows 98 or something along those lines. HaHa! So that was not going to do. But as if I am spending money on another copy of Windows XP. I have always been a Microsoft girl (I am my father’s daughter). But I said: Hey, girl, why not try Linux? Feisty Fawn appealed to me the most because the windows wobble. And apparently it is very user friendly and easy to install (which is true).

It’s almost done installing… I am so excited I could burst. Say goodbye to 1998! Goodbye Microsoft! (gee, next thing you know I will be getting a mac, joking, I will never get a mac)

You should try Mandriva 2007. Its really good. Its the next version of Mandrake. It runs on practically all computers. If you put it on a good computer (that are in fashion today) you can actually have a 3d desktop.

What flavour Linux? We run Linux almost to the exclusion of all else. I have one old laptop with XP for my accounting, etc.

I was literally in the exact same situation last week, but the computer in question was a desktop, not laptop. I installed Ubuntu. So far, so good…

I prefer XP, though. ‘Cause ya’ know, home is home.

Way to Go!! I have been using Win98SE for 7 Years, Found Ubuntu in Feb 07 (Have ver 7.04 Now)and as you say “Goodbye Wonderful World of Windows 98″
p.s: You might want to install xubuntu-desktop from your package manager so you can switch back and forth before logging in. I did and it is actually preaty neat to have all the different options available.

Feisty Fawn? It’s a linux kernel? I haven’t seen that one. I use Vector Linux for older computers but it does require some strong background in linux/unix to get the most out of it.

Bill Gates said how can the unix os be modern, afterall, it was built in 1969! I will point out that unix/gnu linux is much like the AK-47 assault rifle. It is at the apex of it’s design. You can add more bells and whistles, but the design is perfect and really cannot be improved upon in any tremendous way.

I suggest anyone interested in technology to learn how to run a real linux kernel. Perhaps even build their own! No matter how popular microsoft is, it is in no way even close to the perfection of linux and will never be! I hope you enjoy your new project:)

Never say never! I was a MS user since DOS. Last year, my company purchased a MacBookPro for me and I’ve never looked back. I’m not going to tell you the fairy tail of the commercials, but it has been very nice.

It was a good move - I am happy with my “big decision”. I bet I would like having a mac just for fun - but I would still need to have a PC. I have had a PC since I was 8 years old (in the late 80s) and it’s been true love ever since. I could “cheat” but I could never totally end the relationship.

Why would you never get a mac? They are a far superior machine. That’s not just my opinion by the way - it’s in the Bible AND science has proven it…you can get more sure than that!

:o)

sorry..that should be you CAN’T get more sure than that…

I’ve totally undermined my own credibility now, huh?

Hi Danielle, I am saving for a Mac right now because I cannot use (will not) Vista. I’ll point out that a Mac is a pc and can do everything a Windows pc can do and more!

They are expensive but worth the money. When I buy one it will be my first. Also, the Mac OS is unix based which gives it incredible stability and security. The reason I won’t use Vista is because it has a backdoor which allows Microsoft to look inside my computer and look at anything they want. Also, Vista is built using a new network stack which is not secure. XP is much more secure than Vista will ever be. Network security is earned slowly over time and I don’t trust new network stacks!

I`m fan of both OSs, Win and Mac, `cause I think is the same thing and I can do anything in both OSs. I know Apple computers since the Apple IIc and PC since Windows 3.11. I worked on both a LOT and the big differences for me are 2:

Windows recognizes ALL ever, Macintosh sometimes does not.
There are many and more appz/cracks/hacks for Win.
