Pink Sunday Reviews

Internet Marketing Blog

How do you get a Free Sunday Blog Review on my Pink Internet Marketing blog? Comment on my blog. I will pick a few blogs from new commenters for a mini-review here every Sunday. Just my way of saying “Thanks for stopping by” and to encourage comments from other bloggers.

Marketing Ruined My Life, a blog by Canadian Jeremy Lim, is a Vancouver marketing blog. This blog features posts on many topics related to marketing and web development, in particular, he recently posted on his attendance of facebookcampvancouver.

Alfred’s Tech Blog is a blog about the various websites, applications, tools that the tech savvy do or should use. Alfred seems like he likes things fast (web and otherwise, vroom vroom) and has all kinds of tips and hints to offer up.

Web 2.0 Marketing is Levon’s blog about, well, Web 2.0 marketing. Marketing online has change a lot with the advent of the very very social web, and this blog aims to discuss the new marketing outlets.

Ciao!

Who won the bear?

I suppose as this is the final day of my blog contest, and the date specified as the date I would officially announce the winners of my blog contest.

The GRAND PRIZE: An adorable cuddly Build-A-Bear wearing a cute pink tee-shirt that has CANADA on it… only available in Canada I might mention

The BONUS PRIZE: Pink Candy, one candy item for each entry in my blog contest

Well, I had a lot of fun reading the different views on what people thought about my blog, and it was very exciting today to cut out 21 pieces of paper and write all the names and domains of the participants on them. Oh, BTW 21 entries, 21 candy item. That will be a lot of candy. I will do a mix of all pink candies… and will include a few packs of FreshenUp gum as promised.

facebook groups for bloggers

Recently, I joined the “Bloggers of Canada” facebook group in order to begin networking with other Canadian bloggers. I have noticed that while I do have a few Canadian blogging friends I really want to expand the number of Canadian bloggers I converse with, and the number of Canadian blogs that I read.

The “Bloggers of Canada” facebook group was created by Mona of the Rebellious Arab Girl blog. Her blog, very personal and honest, is full of passion; she is passionate about the content she discusses on her blog and she is passionate about blogging. Mona sends occasional messages to other bloggers letting them know of blogging events, and updates to the facebook group. I have made a few contacts so far, and I am slowly growing the number of Canucktastic blogs I read.

Group Schmoop… What’s so special about facebook?

Yes, I am aware that are many groups for bloggers in many places and this is just one more place. But let’s get serious: no other site has 45 million users and counting. And I am going to tell you something shocking now: not every blogger is looking to market their blog. What!!?! Many bloggers just blog and don’t care about the amount of traffic they get. They just do it because they must. Furthermore: every blogger has a facebook account. It’s practically a law or something I think.

It is hard to “find all the blogs” when marketing and SEO is something that is really important to only a minority. What am I to search for? And I want to meet a very specific type of blogger - “Bloggers of Canada”. Have you ever searched for blogs based on geography? Search engines don’t work that way. And the tedium of sifting through a directory is like torture to me.

What type of blogger are you? Join a group. Can’t find the right group? Create one!

N.B. You might not get 45 million visitors.

Pink Sunday Reviews

The creator of the new facebook application Favourite Games is promoting a new resource for facebook application developers at his Facebook Developer news blog. This is a great locale to learn more about the actual creation of a facebook app, and then goes on to discuss marketing and things to expect along the way when creating an app. Be sure to check this out if you have created, or are thinking of creating, a facebook app. This blog combines developer savvy with marketing know-how.

One Eyed View is a blog that brings you the news that you might not usually hear about. This is a great blog, posting on issues that are important to many of us, and should be important to many of us. With posts on science, space, society, and much more, I suggest this blog for everyone who sometimes wishes to question authority.

Fuel Ghoul, another alternative viewpoint blog, discusses many alternative energy ideas, posts about climate change, and other environmental/social issues that affect us all, and will begin to affect us more and more each day. A fabulous blog that reminds us that we should start to consider replacing the non-renewable resources we rely on so much with more environmentally friendly alternatives.

SEO for facebook applications

Today, facebook has announced that they are opening up the Application Directory and the Application about pages to search engines, which means greater distribution and visibility. Users who are not logged in will now be able to view the information relating to facebook applications.

This has two main consequences:

  1. This means that applications have one more way to succeed (or one more way to fail). facebook developers will now want to think about their keyword count, links to their application about pages, such as this link to Matt Huggins application: the Favourite Games video games application.
  2. Another way for companies to use facebook to extend their corporate branding - not only can you create a facebook application, but you can promote this application off facebook. For example, say you have a company site and you want to link to your application. This means that users no longer need to be logged in to view the app your are offering. Which is sometimes too much of a hassle. And your application can now be viewed in search engines. Imagine the power of the facebook domain name. Now use it to your SEO advantage.

Great news for a chilly windy fall afternoon. It was inevitable that this should occur, as facebook is continually pursuing new ways to help facebook application developers, and I suspected from some comments made at facebookcamptoronto2 that this was to occur.

The Control Movie

Controversy is pervasively successful in ensuring an eternal annotation in the annals of history. The world of post-punk is no different. Joy Division, a band that made little money during its four years of playing and only two albums released, is now being featured in a full length film by Anton Corbjin and there are many reasons I am looking forward to this particular movie viewing experience. The Control movie, I have heard from a friend who has some ins to the movie industry, is quite good, and apparently I am going to enjoy it a lot. I am prone to dark, slow stories with existentialist themes.
control_movie_poster.jpgControl is filmed in black and white, and Corbjin was inspired by the Joy Division’s austere album art. Creator of the artwork and photography of countless album covers, music videos and magazine covers, Corbjin is no doubt the perfect director to visually capture this story.

Some background about the Joy Division…

This movie is based on the book Touching from a Distance: Ian Curtis & Joy Division by Deborah Curtis, and this is her take on Ian Curtis’ story, one of the greater tragedies of music history. Warsaw was formed in 1976, but in 1978 changed their name to Joy Division, after the prostitution wings in Nazi camps in the book The House of Dolls, a name that New Order members would later admit regretting for moral reasons (sound file, you have to listen to hear their comments). The band released two albums, one in 1979 and another in 1980. When, Ian Curtis hung himself in his home, the band became New Order.

Post-Punk Britain Late 70s

I am general fan of movements towards anarchism and disruption of the status quo. Following on the heels of the earlier punk movement, post-punk is marked by being much more experimental, synthesizers and the like and the music of the Joy Division no exception. It is dark, atmospheric. The post-punk music of the mid 70s to 80s is what laid the groundwork for the alternative music to follow, and the Joy Division is one band that is credited with changing the face of music forever.

I Heart Samantha Morton

One of my favourite films of all time, In America, stars the talented and beautiful Samantha Morton. I make a point of seeing all her films and her involvement in the film in 2005 was very exciting for me. She plays the role of Deborah Harris, Curtis’ wife whom he married in 1975. As their marriage progressed, it became strained and Curtis was prone to extramarital affairs. Samantha Morton will no doubt be a perfect addition to this as with any film.

Toronto October 26

I will have to go to Toronto to see the Control movie, as it is not in London anytime soon; I went all the way to TO to go to facebookcamptoronto2, so why not a movie too… ?

October 26 - Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver
November 2 - Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton

It’s all about control

This movie is about control - or rather loss it. If you listen to a lot of the lyrics, and understand Curtis’ struggle with epilepsy, the band’s dismal management, the fact that they were struggling to pay their own household bills, and the confusing love triangles, you see that Curtis had lost control of the direction his life had taken. Once quoted as saying that their music was about “the different ways different people can cope with certain problems, how they might or might not adapt”, you see that Curtis’ existentialism may have mirrored Camus’, and he regained control by taking his life.

Later this week: How Marketing Failed Ian Curtis and the Joy Division ;)

Let’s Get Serious: What’s With All The Pink?

Okay… this is gonna be funny.

In a recent thread in the Cre8asite Forums the following statement was made:

I’m increasingly intrigued by the number of women in SEO who incorporate sexuality in their brand identity. Blogs are pink, use sexy images and vernacular, and just ooze “girl power.”

Do I offend? I address this issue in the thread because I almost had a moral responsibility to comment on this “issue”.

Technorati rank means nothing

GrokDotCom recently:

suggested to fellow bloggers that, if rank meant everything
. . . every blogger who’s had even one link documented by Technorati could rejoice more than they already are after being accidentally ranked #1 todaythanks to a glitch. If rank meant everything, you wouldn’t have to create fresh, original content.

If rank meant everything, blogs wouldn’t be worth reading.

Everyone would be baiting links (like I am).

Like money, when rank means everything, it means nothing.

Do blog readers really care about rank?

Would content by any other number smell as sweet?

And recently, he asked again while discussing the Techmeme Leaderboard… so I would to “share my thoughts” as he asked.

While I can understand that really, rank in ALL cases is something that can be inflated and distorted and manipulated. Wherever there is a system, someone will find a way to get around it enhance their own results.

Take for example My Blog and SEOmoz.org. I have 23 fans, they have 28. Clearly my blog is much much less popular than the other one. But my I have lots more fans because generally I am the fan of all my fans. And SEOmoz.org has only 2.5x the amount of links in Technorati as my friend Mike. (Now, Mike, I am not denying your awesomeness because I am sure you are reading this with the linkback.) But it still surprised me. I mean, they have teams of bloggers and it is an SEO blog. You would think that they would have crazy good Technorati rank, right?

I guess, at first at least, I was going to try to prove that rank mattered, but I guess I showed it does not. SEOmoz.org is making mad cash and they are a very popular site. But their Technorati rank is not that impressive considering. Because Technorati rank does not matter. I have almost as many fans, and Mike will probably match them in Technorati links in a few more months, and I don’t think either of us will get a paid content section anytime soon.

And about the Techmeme leaderboard. No comment. I don’t even want to talk about it or think about it. I am just going to pretend it’s not there until it goes away.

In The Spirit of Pink: Blogging For A Good Cause

Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Logo

During the month of October, I will be blogging in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. October 2007 is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and be sure to check out Finding Hope, the CBCF blog. Yes, they’re blogging too. In any case, I got a few good suggestions and I would like try a few things to raise some money this month. All monies made on the Pink Internet Marketing blog will be donated to the CBCF.

Donate Button at the Bottom of Each Post

For the month of October, each post will include a donate button. I will of course indicate with the button that the monies are all being donated to this Pink Cause, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. I am not sure how well this will do, but perhaps I can garner a few donations. Any small contribution counts, am I not correct?

Review Blogs or Websites

During the month of October, get your blog or website reviewed here at Pink Internet Marketing by making a donation to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. If you are interested in a review here on my blog, please email me at technophelia [at] yahoo.ca. I can provide you with a good thorough review, and can even comment on ways to maximize the potential of your site in search if you are not inclined to that sort of thing.

All Donors Will Get a Link On This Post

If you would like to have link here on this post, leave it in the special notes space when you donate, along with the anchor text of your preference (I will not link to porn or drug sites, sorry). If you prefer to remain anonymous, that is okay too.

A Few Awareness Raising Posts

During the month of October, I plan on posting a few times about Breast Cancer Awareness month, to remind people and continue to raise awareness. Hopefully these can draw some attention and garner some attention for donations.

Other Ways To Help

Spread awareness about Breast Cancer Awareness month, and about the Pink Cause. As October 2007 is Breast Cancer Awareness month, bloggers can raise awareness by blogging about it! ;)

How to Host a Blogging Contest

Before ever undertaking my new Blog Contest to Win a Pink SEO bear, I certainly did some background research to make sure that I did it right. I want to make the most out of this in order to thank my readers for their support by offering prizes, as well to draw some new attention to my blog.

I have compiled a list of the different things I considered prior to hosting a blogging contest on my Pink Internet Marketing blog:

  1. I have seen lots of contests going on around the blogosphere, many for prizes of great worth. Certainly, the bigger the prize, the more attention you will receive, but at the same time, you don’t want to offer a prize that is too big for your blog. I felt my prizes are reflective of my traffic, but for higher traffic blogs larger prizes may be offered as they will receive the attention they deserve.
  2. Make updates on the contest throughout - perhaps link to the newest entries. I myself plan on making an update each week showing the progress of the candy jar, and showing new entries.
  3. Don’t expect people to find out about your contest just by visiting your blog. Promote your contest on contest blogs and sites and on blogging communities to which you belong. One of the major reasons for hosting a blog contest is to help promote your blog, so ensure that you announce it in as many places as possible. A list published recently on Contest Blogger of the Top Contest Blogs on the Web is a good place to start when promoting your contest. Another site, Laura Blogging ContestWilliams’ Musings, is another site to consider, as she presents a daily contest roundup.
  4. If possible, make the prize something that extends your branding. I was lucky to have the cute bear on my blog already - and I know EVERYBODY thinks it is cute and I know many of my readers would a) want the bear or b) want to give the bear to a loved one (romantic liaison or tiny person). You want the prize to appeal to your readers (being your niche), appealing to everyone is not required as you want to reward and attract those in your niche.
  5. You might want to have a small blog contest at first (like mine) if you are looking to offer a very large prize. Test it out, find out what works and what does not. Learning from your experiences the first time around will help you really get the most out of having a big blogging contest.

Be sure to enter my blogging contest, and win the cutest bear in the blogosphere. ;)
